Record First, Decide the Format Later

You don’t record “a GIF” — you record a tab, window, or screen the normal way, then decide what the footage becomes at export. That ordering matters more than it sounds. The same take can go out twice: a full-quality WebM for the documentation, a tight GIF of the key moment for the chat message announcing it. Trim to the seconds that matter, pick GIF, export, then widen the trim and export the video. Nothing is re-recorded and nothing leaves the editor.

MP4 appears in the format row when the browser can record it; WebM is always there. GIF is always there too.

The 120-second ceiling is the raised one — GIF export used to stop at 30 seconds, and that limit now only marks where the editor starts warning you that the file will get slow and large. Dimensions never exceed the source; a 720-pixel recording exported at Large stays 720, not stretched to 960.

Every Edit Bakes Into the Loop

The GIF renders through the same compositor as the video exports, so the polish comes with it. Auto-zoom drives into each click. Annotations, blur regions, and captions draw exactly where you placed them. Clips play at the speed you set, keystroke badges appear, the webcam bubble sits where you put it, and the whole capture keeps its padded background and aspect ratio — 16:9, 9:16 for vertical, 1:1, 4:3, or a custom frame.

Captions earn a special mention: GIF is a silent format, so burned-in captions are how a talking demo survives the conversion. Everything you said, readable in a loop that plays without sound.

Keeping the File Honest

GIF predates video compression, and it shows — every frame is stored as indexed pixels, so size scales with dimensions × frame rate × length. The defaults are chosen to keep you out of trouble: 12 fps and a capped edge produce loops that drop into Slack without a groan. When you need smaller still, trim tighter or step down to the Small preset. And when a clip runs long, the honest answer is that a WebM will look better and weigh less — the GIF cap exists precisely because the format punishes length.
