A viewer will forgive a lot, but not a progress bar in real time. The install that took ninety seconds while you recorded is ninety seconds of nothing when someone watches it back — and the usual fixes are both bad. Re-record and hope the wait is shorter? Speed up the entire video and turn your narration into chipmunk audio? Speed Belongs to the Clip

Select any clip on the timeline and its speed chips appear: 0.5×, 1×, 1.5×, and 2×. One click sets the rate for that clip alone. Every other clip keeps its own speed, which is the whole argument for doing it this way — a recording is not one thing, it’s narration and action and waiting, and each deserves a different pace.

Fast-Forward the Boring Stretch

The workflow is three keystrokes and a click. Playhead to where the dull part starts, S to split. Playhead to where it ends, S again. Select the clip in between, tap . At export, that 40-second install now takes 20, and the viewer watches the progress bar sprint instead of crawl — context preserved, patience intact.

Be honest with yourself about the stretch, though. If nothing on screen matters at all, don’t compress it — delete it. Ripple delete removes the clip and closes the timeline around the cut, which turns a two-minute wait into no wait. Speed is for compressing action worth seeing; deletion is for action that isn’t.

Ramps, Not Gear Changes

Here’s the detail most editors skip. When a 1× clip runs directly into a 2× clip, snapping between the rates on the boundary frame looks like the video hiccupped. SuperchargeCapture ramps instead: across a window of about a quarter of a second, the export eases through the speed change on a smooth acceleration curve, so 1× to 2× reads as the video picking up pace rather than jerking forward.

The ramp is deliberately selective. It only applies where the two clips are continuous footage — a boundary where you deleted something in between stays a hard transition, because a cut should read as a cut, not get smeared into a smooth one.

Slow Down the Moment That Matters

0.5× earns its place on the other end. A toast notification that flashes for two frames, a keyboard-driven interaction that’s over before the eye catches it, a cursor gesture you want the viewer to actually follow — half speed gives the moment room without you having to perform it artificially slowly while recording.

Applied at Export, Undone in a Keystroke

Speed is an instruction stored on the clip, not a change to your footage. The export plays each kept clip at its own rate — nothing is re-encoded until you render, everything happens locally on your machine, and Ctrl/Cmd+Z reverts a speed change like any other edit. Recording, editing, and rendering never leave your device, and none of it needs an account.

How do I speed up only one part of a recording?
Split it into its own clip first. Move the playhead to where the slow part begins and press S, move to where it ends and press S again, then select the middle clip and pick 2×. The rest of the recording stays at normal speed — that's the point of speed living on clips rather than the whole video.
What happens at the boundary between two different speeds?
The export eases through the change over roughly a quarter of a second, following a smooth acceleration curve, instead of snapping from one rate to the other. Boundaries where footage was deleted between the clips stay hard — a cut should read as a cut, so ramps only apply where the footage is continuous.
Does speeding a clip up shorten the exported video?
Yes, proportionally. A 40-second stretch at 2× exports as 20 seconds; the same stretch at 0.5× exports as 80. The duration shown for the edit reflects each clip's speed, so what you see is what the export runs.
Can I timelapse a long wait, like a build or an install?
2× is the fastest preset, so a two-minute wait still exports as a minute. For a stretch where nothing meaningful happens on screen, the better tool is usually ripple delete — cut the wait entirely and let the recording jump to the result. Speed is for compressing action; deletion is for removing it.
Does changing speed alter the original recording?
